GAA in St Patrick’s De La Salle

Since 1888 Saint Patrick’s De La Salle has had a proud association with our national games. Hurling and football are played by our pupils from a very early age. We have a proud tradition of hurling with former principals, teachers and pupils having represented Kilkenny at the highest level, winning county, provincial and All Ireland medals.

We want to keep this tradition alive by continuing to develop the students’ interest, enjoyment and skills in the games. We benefit from the help of our James Stephens GPO, who coaches some of our classes each week. We are also very lucky that some former staff members still help to coach classes during the year. Our class teachers also take a very active role in promoting hurling and prepare their classes for the Class Leagues each year. We participate in the Cumann na mBunscol competition each year where we enter an Under 11 and an Under 13 team in the hurling competition and an Under 13 team in the football competition. We also participate in class leagues each year from 2nd class up to 6th class with the other schools in the city. We have had some great success in these competitions over the years.

Students have also participated in the annual Cumann na mBunscol handball competition in both Under 11 and Under 13. Handball is a great sport for developing hand-eye coordination and also speed, agility and balance.
